if you don't want to use the "roms" menu in mame, you can use the "full" menu, which will give you the roms in the directory you choose. you will get a lot more roms this way than from the "roms" menu. the roms should be in .zip format. download these to a folder you can open with a zip program. rename the zip files so they have the same name as the rom file in the directory they came from, ie. he-man.zip will become he-man.zip.
the "upping" submenu has a lot of options for upping the roms. you can select the roms to be upc'd, specify how many you want to be upc'd, and how to split the upc'd roms between two or more copies. also, you can specify the target directory, where you want the new roms to go. this helps if you have a lot of roms. you can also change the name of the new rom to something better.
if you choose this option, the new roms will be created in the current directory. they will be the same name as the original rom. if you have more roms in this directory, they will all be duplicated. if you have fewer roms in this directory, you will get fewer new roms.
